This was definitely one of the best moments of my weekend at ComicCon...

Jeffster performed at the opening of the Chuck panel!

Quick though about Polaris

Have to say I was impressed that everyone behaved themselves during the Q&A this year ;-)

At no point did I have to hide my face in shame because of fellow slashers. Granted the I haven't had to do it often over the years, but I do remember at least a couple of times in the past where I've metaphorically slunk down in my chair thinking 'oh god no' at questions that have been asked during Q&As.

And I've never seen shenanigans of the type I hear about happening at other cons. I'm not sure if it's a canadian thing or just they have really good security people at Polaris, but I've never seen anyone get really inappropriate with a guest. I've seen guest hanging out in the hotel bar (most notably when Anthony Head and Jason Carter sat down on the bar stool next to me) and often at the Saturday night dance and people generally leave them to their own devices. Then again it may be because I'm shy and I would never dream of intruding on them, so I'm always shocked when other people do.

Heading off to ComicCon next week which should be a trip.

End of an era

We lost both Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson today... they will be missed.

I remember watching Charlies Angels as a young girl, and although Kate Jackson was always my favourite Angel, I do remember having Farrah hair for a while ;-)

As for MJ, despite the more recent weirdness he was a musical presence in my life all through my teens/early 20s. I remember being amazed by the Thriller video, and being very jealous of my sister who got to go see him in concert in Montreal when we were teenagers.

Been a while

I've been meaning to update here forever, but you know how RL just takes over sometimes.

So got laid off, but luckily got another job almost immediately (and don't think I don't know how lucky I was), it's a term position until October but a good chance of becoming a permanent gig.

Saw the new Terminator movie, great FX but kind of meh about the rest. Wish new Torchwood season would just start already wven though we're only getting 5 eps.

Am deep in planning mode for my trip to Vegas/San Diego. So much to do, so little time. Also will be attending Polaris in Toronto next month especially now that David Hewlett has been confirmed as a guest. Granted I would have gone anyways as I go every year, but some years the guest list just makes me hop up and down with fangirl glee ;-) Oh and Barrowman and Tennant will be at ComicCon as will Peter Jackson so that is like extra icing *g*

* must make an effort to go check out the ComicCon website (even though I find it confusing and hard to find stuff)

Star Trek

Saw Star Trek today... went to the 1:30 show at the IMAX which was packed... there were guys in uniform! Can someone tell me why I have to sit through a 5 minute 'here's what's so great about IMAX' commercial every time I go? And I swear to god the flashing strobe/laser lights are going to give me a seizure one of these days. But I digress Spoiler/squee alert )

I went in pretty much unspoiled aside from the trailers and overall I just loved it.

How did I not know that we were getting 10 eps of Primeval this year?

Oh and I went to see Wolverine with my sister this afternoon, nothing like blowing off work to go to the movies ;-) It answered a lot of questions about Wolverine's past, and I didn't know that he and Sabretooth were brothers. I much preferred Liev Schreibers Sabertooth to the one from the first X-men movie. Oh and Gambit was very cool, I thought the playing cards thing would be lame but they made it cool ;-)

So next Monday we're going to see Star Trek at the IMAX, which should be way cool.

Saw this announcement today ;-)

IBM unveiled a breakthrough research project that holds the potential to infuse business and societal systems with unprecedented levels of intelligence: a new computing system, code-named Watson, that will compete with people at the game of Jeopardy!

"The challenge is to build a system that, like none before it, can rival the mind's ability to determine precise answers to natural language questions and to compute accurate confidences in the answers," said Dr. David Ferrucci, leader of the IBM Watson project team. "This confidence processing ability is key to winning at Jeopardy!. It greatly distinguishes the IBM approach from conventional search, and is critical to implementing useful business applications of question answering."

Produced by Sony Pictures Television and distributed by CBS Television Distribution, Jeopardy! is a game demanding knowledge and quick recall, covering a broad range of topics, such as history, literature, politics, film, pop culture, and science. It poses a grand challenge for a computing system due to the variety of subject matter, the speed at which contestants must provide accurate responses, and because the clues given to contestants involve analyzing subtle meaning, irony, riddles, and other complexities at which humans excel and computers traditionally do not. Watson will incorporate massively parallel analytical capabilities and, just like human competitors, Watson will not be connected to the Internet or have any other outside assistance.

Pretty sure Sarah Connor would be alarmed by this system *g*

I'm told that the issue I'm having with viewing the posting page in DW is that I'm using IE6. I know it's an antiquated browser with many faults and all kinds of issues, but in some ways I'm really a creature of habit and I've been reluctant to change it, but now I'm going to bite the bullet and download firefox and see how I like it.

However they're going to have to pry XP out of my cold dead hands before I'll even think about switching to Vista.

ETA: OK Firefox is installed, this tab thing is going to take some getting used to, but the posting page in DW looks like it should now, so that's a plus.

That was impressive...

So I'm having a quiet Saturday just me and the job listings, and I'm sitting at the computer when I notice that a huge bank of black clouds are heading my way... I go to the balcony doors to look out (cause storms are cool) and then there is this unreal wind that comes howling by the window, and as I'm watching a large piece of the roofing (and when I say large I mean bigger than a car)on the building next door flies off and sails down into the parking lot a minute or so later the wind stops and all I can see is debris swirling down from the sky. I went out on the balcony and according to one of my neighbors the damage was even worse on the other side of the building where a tornado ripped part of the roof off a couple of houses and an apartment building one block over! The whole thing lasted maybe 5 minutes and the power only flickered once, but wow that was a pretty impressive display ;-)

So I'm sitting here listening to the sirens of the many firetrucks that have responded to this, and thankful that I don't really keep anything on my balcony.

ETA: Apparently it wasn't a tornado but a micro burst, which can do the same type of damage as a tornado but is much smaller and shorter.

ETA2: There is an apartment building a block away that has half it's roof missing! The other half is kind of hanging half on and half off the building... it's a pretty impressive sight. Also I was driving around and I saw a couple of trees that have been ripped completely out of the ground.

So here I am on Dreamwidth... how cool is that.

I gave serious thought to changing my username from the one I had on LJ but it's been such a crappy day that I couldn't think of a good one so entropy wins and I've kept the same one ;-)

I managed to get it to import my entries from LJ but I've apparently failed at importing comments. Oh and I need to figure out to change the layout and cross-posting and all that good stuff as well.

ETA: Still havn't managed the crossposting thing and the post an entry page is being all weird on me as well... *sigh* I'll have to figure this out later as I'm hungry now and am going to make some dinner instead.

Pirate Bay

So I hear the guys running Pirate Bay were convicted of copyright infringement and sentenced to a year in jail and assessed a huge fine last week. Now I admit I've never used Pirate Bay for my torrenting, but it is the largest torrent site around at the moment, but I am now worried for the sites that I do use. Granted even if Pirate Bay does end up shutdown (this may not happen as most of the servers are scattered around the world and not actually in physical possession of the guys running the site) it won't take long for someone else to step into their shoes. Really the only way to limit the number of people using torrents would be to kill broadband (you could never stop it entirely as some die hards would still torrent even if they only had dialup), and really that's not likely to happen, and even if it did people would still find a way around it. I'll admit I download a lot of stuff on torrent sites, mostly TV shows as I don't have cable or satellite TV, and I'd really miss it if I couldn't do it anymore. Also it allows me to watch tv shows that's I'd never get to see otherwise, mostly stuff from the UK. I've been watching Secret Diary of a Call Girl this weekend... it's quite fun.

Normally I avoid this sort of thing like the plague...

out of curiosity I clicked on a youtube link on my friends page, it was a clip from a show called Britain's Got Talent, and all I can say is WOW! Generally I avoid most 'reality' TV like the plague, but I was bored so I decided what the heck... and wow am I glad I did. So I'm going to share it with the rest of you as well ;-)

Since the embedded link isn't available, here is a direct link Susan Boyle on Britain's Got Talent

It probably helps that she's singing one of my favourite songs from Les Miserables.

Just back from Easter lunch at my Dad's, got a belated birthday present... a $150 gift card for Ikea \o/

I need a new bookshelf so looks like I'll be shopping for that sooner rather than later ;-)

It's a nice day out today, finally, sunny and about 10C. Now if only the car alarm that's going off in the parking lot would stop going off.

Gotta love the procrastinating...

I've been home all day, have a ton of stuff to do... so far I've managed to get the laundry done (at 9pm). I really should be upgrading my brother in law's new laptop, working on my CV, cleaning my apartment. Instead I've been watching TV and working on my latest cross stitch project. Spent yesterday shopping at the Byward market (the only place in Ottawa open on Good Friday) followed by a trip to Gatineau (along with half the population of Ottawa) as the stores in Quebec are open on Good Friday, they will have the day off on Monday which I've never understood. Especially since the majority of the population of Quebec is Catholic... you'd think they'd want Good Friday off.

Tomorrow we're having brunch at my sisters and then lunch at my Dad's on Monday.

And hey... new Doctor Who special today :-)

Job update

So I've started sending out resumes. I've also sent an e-mail to my managers manager outlining why they should transfer me as a team lead to the new office in Montreal. So we'll see what happens with that. I've decided not to cancel my trip to Comic Con as I've already bought the plane tickets and I have the money saved for the trip. And should the worst happen and I can't find a job before June 12th then I can always apply for Employment Insurance (considering I've been paying into it for years).

Have I mentioned how much I hate job hunting?

Morale around the office is at an all time low, as you can imagine. And I have to admit it's hard finding the motivation to get out of bed and go to work these days.

But it's Easter this weekend which means 4 day weekend for me ;-)

How did I not know that Primeval season 3 had started? Sadly we'll only get 6 eps, but it's a bright spot in a really suck week.

Now if only Torchwood would start.

Really Sucktastic Day

Everyone in my office got laid off today. As of June 12th I will not have a job, I'm hoping that I'll be able to transfer to another department but I'm also going to have to start looking outside the company to see if I can find something. *sigh*

One of the options may mean a move to Montreal or Toronto which I'm not really sure I want to do. Anyway I'm really thinking I should have stayed in bed this morning.

And I have a splitting headache from a combination of stress and the building management testing the fire alarm system off and on all day.

and the pigeon war continues...

Despite my hanging of pie plates the cheeky buggers still tried to build another nest... no egg this time but definite nest building activity. I swept away their little collection of twigs, noticed that the pie plates had become tangled up with the sting they're hanging from, untangled them so that they're dangling again and so far so good. I may have to buy one of those stupid plastic owls and see if that helps if this continues...

As I've mentioned previously last September I started buying stock in the company I work for, and every quarter they send me nice little statements showing how much stock I own. Granted it's not a lot because the stock is trading at almost $100 a share. At the moment I think I've bought maybe 7 shares so far (I have an amount deducted from my pay that goes to buy the stock). So I go to get the mail today and I have received a dividend cheque... for $0.01! I think they calculated the dividend based on the amount of shares I owned at the end of the 3rd quarter (which was less than 1 at the time), I'm not really sure what to do with the cheque as I'll feel stupid depositing it.

Oh and apparently I have to vote my proxy when I receive my annual report... not sure what that means so now I will have to do research.
